Benefice of Farleigh, Candover and Wield

Dear Friends,

Easter is here: the resurrection of Jesus Christ broke the power of death and fear of death and opened the gate of heaven to all who put their trust in Him. We live not for ourselves but for Him, to serve the Saviour and walk with Him, knowing that when our time comes to depart this world, we have a home with him that He has gone to prepare for us. And so we live circumspectly, knowing life is fragile, wonderful, but also limited.

As we give thanks for a living Saviour whom we can know and enjoy, He gives us hope in every circumstance because He is with us, not far away, but in our hearts as we invited Him in when we put our trust in Him. Easter services should be uploaded in time for tomorrow morning so go to the website and join in online.

On Easter Sunday at 10.00 a.m. many millions of Christians will stand outside their homes and sing “Jesus Christ is risen today “ and “Thine be the glory” in response to a suggestion, backed by Church Leaders across the country and world, by David Pott, from Bishop Auckland, who had the idea recently. It was as a response to seeing the Italians on their balconies singing to encourage one another. While a government and bishops’ ban remains in place for us to assemble together to worship, we can still come out of our homes and sing praise to Him who lives and has saved us.

Stephen is taking a slight risk in doing this at 9.00 at Dummer, 10.00 at Ellisfield (from his garden with next door neighbours accompanying the singing with accordion) and at 11.00 at Cliddesden, but it is to encourage us not to be afraid or hide our faith in a living Saviour. If you don’t have a hymnbook at hand nor can remember the words to the two hymns, here they are so that you can print them:

Jesus Christ is risen today; Hallelujah!
Our triumphant holy day; Hallelujah!
Who did once upon the cross; Hallelujah!
Suffer to redeem our loss; Hallelujah!

Hymns of praise then let us sing; Hallelujah!
Unto Christ our heavenly King; Hallelujah!
Who endured the cross and grave; Hallelujah!
Sinners to redeem and save: Hallelujah!

But the pains which He endured; Hallelujah!
Our salvation have procured; Hallelujah!
Now in heaven above He’s King; Hallelujah!
Where the angels ever sing: Hallelujah

THINE BE THE GLORY, risen, conquering Son;
Endless is the victory thou o’er death hast won.
Angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away,
Kept the folded grave-clothes where Thy body lay.

Thine be the glory, Risen, conquering Son;
Endless is the victory Thou o’er death hast won!

Lo, Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb!
Lovingly He greets us, scatters fear and gloom.
Let the church with gladness hymns of triumph sing,
For her Lord now liveth, death hath lost its sting.

No more we doubt Thee, Glorious Prince of life;
Life is naught without Thee: aid us in our strife;
Make us more than conquerors, through Thy deathless love;
Lead us safe through Jordan to Thy home above.

May God bless each of you with His risen power to encourage you, to lighten the pressures of being cooped up at home, but with the living hope of Jesus Who is with us, carrying us through this difficult time.

David and Stephen
